Certificate of Competence in Basic Stockmanship and Welfare The qualification is aimed at those people who are new or just beginning to own or work with farm animals and those wishing to brush up on their knowledge and skills. The course offers all the crucial knowledge and skills to carry out routine practical livestock duties ensuring the welfare of the livestock, yourself and others.

This qualification is divided into 2 compulsory units:
1. Basic stockmanship and welfare principles
2. Basic stockmanship and welfare practices

A high importance is placed on animal welfare which will be the emphasis of the whole qualification.
The intensive course which theoretically covers such topics as:
* What to do in the event of an emergency,
* What to look for when buying livestock
* Measures to prevent disease on a farm/holding

With the practical side of the course giving you the necessary skills and confidence to tackle such aspects as:
* Take the temperature of an animal
* Access the body condition of an animal and relate this to their current stage of production.
* Check the health status of a group of animals

It is our aim that the course should last no more than 2 weeks and each person will then be ready to take assessment for a full NPTC certificate.
